Selecting The Right Solar Controller
The solar controller is a key component in your new swimming pool solar heating system. There are several choices out there for controllers. Though it is possible to plumb the solar system with no controller, it would be running whenever the water was being filtered. This would not be recomended, since you only want to run your solar when it can actually collect heat from the sun, otherwise it actually acts in reverse and cools your pool. I explain this further in the Optimization page.
In my opinion you should go with a simple three way diverter valve at minimum. With a manual diverter valve you will have to physically turn the system on and off via this diverter valve in order to regulate the temperature of your pool. While this can be done to a fairly accurate degree, it requires diligence on your part, and constantly checking water temperature and weather conditions. In other words it can be a pain in the butt. Especially so, when you forget to turn your solar panels back on and you lose a day or two of heating your swimming pool, before you remember to turn it back on. There’s nothing like jumping into a cold pool, when your not expecting it.
The other option is an automatic solar controller. This is the preferred method for regulating the temperature of your swimming pool. It makes the most efficient use of your solar heating system. They come complete with a thermostat, so you can just set it to the temperature you desire and then forget about it. The sensors in your controller and at your panels will automatically signal the controller to turn the system on or off as need be. These babies come equipped with several sensors placed at key points in the system that monitor the temperature of the air and your water. When its not efficient to run, or you have already reached your target temperature, it will divert the water away from your solar panels. When it is desireable for the panels to run, they will do so. Of course there is also a switch to manually turn everything on or off, just in case. The automatic solar controllers are very easy to use and require no further maintenance once they are set.
As with the panels, there are several manufacturers of each type of controller and they come in a variety of models, but the essentials are the same. They are either manual or automatic. Th one thats right for you depends again on your specific situation and needs. From being in the business for years, I know many people with solar heated swimming pools, some using manual diverters and others using automatic controllers and most have been happy with their choice.
The nice thing about some models of the manual controller are made to allow easy upgrade to automatic by simply adding the required components. I have done upgrades for people as well, and I will say it is a simple process and doesnt involve any tampering with the plumbing or disturbing of the existing system. Thats something to think about as well, you could always start with the manual, and if its not your cup of tea, just upgrade to the automatic controller. I will discuss the different brands specificly in the product reviews section, when your ready to narrow your selection down to the solar controller that is right for you. In the meantime lets talk about the next step, which is installing and plumbing your solar system.
